Marianne Igel / Paintings and formats

Large abstract paintings

A large painting changes the feel of a wall. This selection shows abstract works by Marianne Igel whose longest side measures at least 100 centimetres in the catalogue.

Originals with documented measurements

The known dimensions and year appear beneath each painting. Some photographs show the works in their original surroundings; Marianne can help with questions about their size.

  • Abstract painting in warm tones: golden yellow and amber fields above, deep red and rust-brown masses at either side, and a pale cream band falling vertically through the centre

    Marrakesh

    Mixed media, 120 × 95 cm, 2014

“A true explosion of colour” was how the Oberbayerisches Volksblatt described this painting when it hung in “Ursprung Erde — Farbe und Form” at the Kunstverein Bad Aibling in July 2014. Marianne worked pure pigments from Morocco into the surface.

  • Abstract painting in portrait format: dark red-brown above, a turquoise-green band beneath it, and a broad cream arc sweeping across the lower half, with orange script-like marks at the lower right

    Morocco

    90 × 110 cm, 2014

A broad cream-coloured arc swings through the lower half, with a band of turquoise green above it and a deep red-brown closing the picture at the top. At the lower right stand orange signs that look like writing and are not. Morocco comes up twice this year: “Marrakesch”, into which she worked pure pigments from there, is from 2014 as well.

  • Abstract painting in teal and slate grey: a broad white brushstroke at the left among cream fields, with red script-like scribbles at the lower right

    All in Plumb

    90 × 100 cm, 2014

The fields are set square to one another: petrol-blue and grey rectangles, a black block, a cream-coloured margin — all of it aligned horizontally and vertically, as the title demands. Against that stands a broad white brushstroke at the left that respects no edge at all, and at the lower right a column of red scribbles that looks like handwriting and is not.

  • Abstract painting in earth tones: a large white field at the left, rust-brown and dark brown beside it, ochre above, and fine pale flecks scattered over the right half

    Contemplation

    110 × 100 cm, 2012

Rust brown and ochre across the whole surface, with a large pale form to the left of centre that never closes into an object. The surface has been drawn off in horizontal bands, so the layers underneath come back up as stripes.

  • Upright abstract painting: a large field of bright yellow above, white and grey beneath it, a dark grainy mass with traces of red right of centre, and a black band along the bottom

    Untitled XII

    80 × 120 cm, 2019

The yellow lies along the top and runs down from there into the white until it stops inside it. Right of centre stands a dark granular mass with traces of red, red comes through the grey at the left, and a black strip closes off the bottom.

  • Upright abstract painting in blue and yellow: a broad cream field lies across the centre, yellow blocks to left and right, dark navy between them, and red script-like marks at the lower right

    Untitled XIII

    90 × 120 cm, 2019

A single broad stroke of cream white lies across the middle, with the frayed edge a fully loaded brush leaves behind. Yellow blocks stand to the left and right of it, deep navy blue between them. At the lower right there is again a row of red marks that looks like writing and is not.

Finding the right size

Consider both width and height and the space around the painting. A portrait-oriented work has a different effect from a wide one; size and composition are best considered together.

The measurements come from Marianne’s existing records. Please ask directly if you would like to know whether a work is currently available or how it is framed.
