Marianne Igel / The paintings

From the catalogue

This selection introduces Marianne’s work. The paintings belong to the present catalogue; they are not attributed here to the exhibitions above.

  • Abstract painting in oxide red and orange with a white field and black strokes

    Untitled I

    Mixed media

Three colours and an edge: oxide red and orange at the right, a broad white sweep straight through, a grey round form below. The border of the white is not painted but torn — where it meets the red it frays and leaves a black wedge standing. Arcs are scratched into the grey form.

  • Abstract painting in thick impasto in oxide red, slate grey, yellow and purple

    Untitled III

    Mixed media

Laid on thick and drawn through while wet: a white stroke rises from below and fans out at the top like a stem, a red and a slate-grey rectangle stand at the left, and yellow glows above. The scratched marks go deep enough to show how the picture is built and not only what it looks like.

  • Abstract painting in landscape format: a dark, grainy mass at the upper left beside a large white field, bright yellow at the edges, and deep wine-red and ochre below

    Origin Earth

    92 × 65 cm, 2013

The earth is at the bottom and along the edges here: wine red and brown-black, drawn off in bands so that pale streaks are left standing in it. A large white field opens above it, and the yellow comes in from outside — top left, down the right-hand edge, and at the lower right as a sweep with spatter. A year later her exhibition at the Kunstverein Bad Aibling carried the same title.
