The seven originals

Documented in 2015, the series ranges from abstract fields of colour to a figure and a collage. Each work’s page shows the details on record.

  • Small square abstract painting: a deep blue-black field at the upper left, pale grey-white to the right, and a light grey branch-like form curving downward between them, with a small yellow-ochre oval at the lower left

    The Small Format I

    30 × 30 cm, 2015

A pale branch divides deep blue from grey-white; a small ochre oval adds a warm note.

  • Small square abstract painting, photographed outdoors on a dark board: a white, heavily textured field with rust-brown and greenish streaks right of centre and dark marks at the lower left

    The Small Format II

    30 × 30 cm, 2015

The white surface breaks at its edges, revealing rust-brown and green beneath.

  • Small square abstract painting, photographed outdoors on a dark board: white and pale grey texture across the whole surface, rust-orange patches at the upper left and small grey strokes like a row of marks at the lower right

    The Small Format III

    30 × 30 cm, 2015

A pale textured surface and rust-orange marks meet a small row of grey signs.

  • Small square abstract painting: a dark navy and black ground crossed by broad white and cream sweeps forming an arc, with an ochre streak at the lower left

    The Small Format IV

    30 × 30 cm, 2015

A white arc crosses navy and black, with a narrow ochre band below.

  • Small square abstract painting: on a black ground, a poured white band curves from the upper left downward in a grainy, granular layer, with a pink glow beneath it

    The Small Format V

    30 × 30 cm, 2015

A grainy white band of paint runs across a dark ground.

  • Small square abstract painting: dark brown and black brushstrokes on a pale lilac-white ground suggest a standing figure with a raised arm, signed at the lower right

    The Small Format VI

    30 × 30 cm, 2015

Dark strokes suggest a standing figure against a pale lilac-white ground.

  • Small square mixed-media work: over printed newspaper carrying event listings, a hunched figure is drawn in charcoal at the centre, with white brushstrokes and a pasted photographic fragment at the left and a black cross at the lower right

    The Small Format VII

    30 × 30 cm, 2015

Newspaper, charcoal and brushstrokes form a collage around a crouching figure.

One format, different works

The first five works use light bands, dark fields and textured surfaces in different ways. The sixth suggests a figure; the seventh combines printed newspaper with a drawn figure.

The seven numbers belong to a series named by Marianne herself. The historical catalogue does not establish which works are still available; please ask directly.

Seeing small originals

A small work invites a close look: edges, incised lines and layers of paint appear differently in person than on a screen.
